The New Luminar 3 with Libraries – the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

On December 18, 2018 Skylum will be releasing their long awaited DAM (Digital Asset Manager) for Luminar. Called Luminar 3 with Libraries, this will be a free update for everyone who currently owns Luminar 2018 on Mac and Windows.

Originally, it was first talked about being released in 2017. Once that didn’t happen it was next anticipated to be released in early 2018. That didn’t happen either, but now here it finally arrives a couple weeks shy of the end of 2018.

Has the long wait been worth it? Let us find out.

Quick Note Before We Get Started

I will be doing a number of free webinars showing off the new Luminar 3 with Libraries between now and December 22. I will update this blog post here once I confirm the dates and I will also be posting it on my Facebook Page as well as in my free-to-join Luminar/Aurora Facebook Group. These will be my own webinars, put on by yours truly 🙂

Join me in one of these webinars to see what is new and to ask any questions you have!!

Two New Webinars have been added, for Saturday, December 15, and Monday, December 17, 2018.

The Good

Since it’s arrival in 2017 Luminar quickly started replacing ON1 as my #1 goto program for enhancing my photographs. At the time, I was still using Capture One Pro and, to a much lesser extent, Lightroom for my RAW files. After some initial adjustments to my RAW file I would send a 16-bit Tiff file to Luminar to finish it off and give it my signature look.

HDR Photography is back in a big way with Aurora HDR from Macphun and Trey Ratcliff

Some amazing new software is coming this week from the group at Macphun, makers of the Creative Kit which includes popular Mac only photo enhancement apps Intensify, Tonality, Snapheal, FX Photo Studio, Focus, and Noiseless.

It is a brand new app called Aurora HDR and was made with help from HDR guru Trey Ratcliff.

And let me tell you, it is quite impressive!! I recently received a beta copy of the software and after using it just a short time I was almost instantly convinced that this is the best HDR software out there, bar none.

I have tried this photo with other HDR software programs in the past and always got halos around the trees and inferior color and brightness.

Watch my interview next week in the ON1 Pro Series

Yesterday I was interviewed by ON1’s Matt Kloskowski for their upcoming ON1 Pro Series which will feature short talks and video demos from myself and other really cool photographers.

File_000-web

In the interview Matt and I talked about things such as what I see happening in the next 5 years with photo processing, my feelings regarding how much or how little one can do to an image in post processing, what tool for post processing I would like to see that hasn’t been developed yet, and more!

In addition to the interview there will also be available a short video showing how I work with a RAW photo in Capture One Pro and really make the photo come to life in ON1 Photo 10.

In the first week of the series I join fellow pro photographers such as Hudson Henry, Blake Rudis, Scott Wyden, Scott Davenport, Frank Salas, and Liz LePage. Be sure to sign up and start watching the videos next week.

For some photographers it can completely replace Photoshop and/or Lightroom. For others it works side by side with those programs as a standalone program or as a plugin. ON1 Photo also still works with Apple’s discontinued Aperture program as well as with Photoshop Elements. It works with OS X starting with 10.8 and newer (including El Capitan) and Windows starting with Windows 7 and newer.
