ON1 Photo RAW Two-Day Crash Course Classroom Photography Workshops
Join ON1 Photo / Perfect Photo Suite expert Matt Suess for 2 days filled with 16 hours of hands-on classroom training using ON1 Photo RAW during his most popular classroom photo workshop.
Matt has been teaching ON1 Photo (originally called Perfect Photo Suite) for over 5 years now online and in-person in numerous states. Thousands of photographers have learned from his courses & videos and he is often featured on ON1’s live webinars, blogs, and Perfect Inspiration Series.
He is a member of the ON1 beta team and regularly speaks to the developers of ON1 Photo to provide insight, offer suggestions, and help debug upcoming versions of the software. Matt also created the very first Facebook group specifically for ON1 users.
If you want to learn ON1 Photo RAW in-person with a small group of people in a hands-on environment this is the workshop for you! Matt has been the only one to offer such classes, he teaches them in at least 5 different states, many students have taken his Crash Course 2, 3, and 4 times now (after each time a new version of the software comes out), and his classes often sell out.
Discover how much easier it is to learn ON1 Photo RAW over Photoshop & Lightroom
Imagine hardly having to use Photoshop & Lightroom anymore - or even at all! For many photographers ON1 Photo RAW may be all they need now, and it is so much easier working on photos with ON1 compared to Photoshop & Lightroom.
Class is designed with plenty of one-on-one time available
Matt has structured this class to provide plenty of hands-on time for the students. Lectures are followed by sessions in which the students work on class photos (or their own) while Matt walks around helping each student individually.
Learn from an expert who regularly uses the software
Matt has been using & teaching ON1 Photo for years. In addition he uses the software almost daily for all of his own photography - from personal projects to his fine art photography collectons.
"This really did exceed my expectations. First day was great but the second day was a WOW. I learned so much. The size of the workshop was perfect... I would highly recommend this workshop. Best workshop ever! I went from 0 to 60 in one weekend."
- Barbara - from MN
How many of you have had a hard time learning Photoshop? This software has been around for over 20 years, and it seems like it would take 20 years to learn it. It is such a complex program that it can be difficult and time consuming to learn and master.
You would think there would be something easier to use by now, wouldn’t you?
They have called it “The Photographer’s Choice for Photo Editing” and here is why: For many photographers ON1 Photo RAW can replace Photoshop and now Lightroom for much – if not most – of the things you need to do to enhance your photographs. Things like working non-destructively on RAW photos, keeping track of and organizing your photos, color correcting, adding special effects, masking objects, resizing photos for print & web, working in layers, enhancing skin in portraits, replacing a sky, converting to black & white, and so much more are made extremely easy compared to doing the same in Photoshop and Lightroom.
Matt has been using ON1 Photo regularly since version 6 and currently uses it on nearly every one of his fine art photographs. Matt is widely known as an expert with ON1's software and his Crash Courses have been a favorite of his students, now regularly selling out.
In these 2-Day hands-on crash courses on ON1 Photo RAW you will learn all of the basic (and some advanced) features of this powerful image editing program used by amateurs and professionals alike.
Matt will demonstrate the software using his laptop hooked up to a projector. You will watch and take notes during lectures as well as follow along with a set of class supplied photographs you can take home with you and continue practicing with.
With a small class size of up to 12 students (depending on class) there will be plenty of time to work with Matt on a one-on-one basis between lectures. Following each lecture, time will be reserved for you to work on your own photos using the techniques just learned as Matt walks around to help each student individually.
Note that while ON1 Photo RAW can be used as a plugin to Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture, for this class we will only be using it as a stand-alone program. Matt will discuss workflow scenarios using Photoshop and Lightroom however.
Who This Class Is For
No prior experience with ON1 Photo RAW is necessary. In this 2-day course you will learn almost every important feature of ON1 Photo RAW starting with the basics and continuing through some more advanced techniques and enhancements. If you do not yet own ON1 Photo RAW, you can download a fully working 30-day free trial just prior to the start of the workshop.
This class is ideal for beginners as well as those who may already have a little experience with ON1 Photo RAW but want to get a firm grasp on all the major features and techniques.
What You Will Learn
In Browse you will learn how to find your photos, add new folders, rename files, read camera metadata, move photos, delete photos, view photos at 100%, add keywords and labels, rate your photos, search for photos, and more.
Non-destructive photo editing comes to RAW photos and it starts in the new Develop module. Instant RAW editing lets you get to work immediately. Learn how to edit your photo while leaving the original file intact, sync or copy/paste Develop settings across multiple photos, create and save specific styles, customize the workspace, recover highlights/shadows, adjust color balance, make global and localized adjustments, add effects, and much much more.
The Layers module allows you to stack and blend numerous photo layers to satisfy most all of your composite photography needs. Learn about layers, stacking and blending, transform layer sizes, moving and deleting layers, and more. In addition Perfect Layers is great for cropping, erasing objects, cloning with the stamp tool, and much more. You will also learn how to remove backgrounds and replace boring skies with dramatic clouds.
Effects is where you can take your ordinary photos and make them extraordinary. With an extensive library of presets – each one fully customizable – you will learn how to add single or numerous effects to your photos to give them a unique and creative look that would be hard to achieve in any other software program.
Black & White
B&W has been moved inside of Effects – now with the ability to do amazing black & white photos on layer stacks along with all the other effects available. I will spend time showing off the powerful b&w abilities in Effects. In addition to numerous presets you will learn how to convert your photo into a stunning black & white image using the manual controls to give you the exact look you want. In addition to b&w you can convert your photo to sepia or use other colors to tint your image. You will also learn how to bring back some of the original color for truly creative looks.
Learn how to resize your photos using the built-in presets for popular photo sizes and printers, and learn how to manually resize your photos. Resize will allow you to greatly increase or decrease the size of your original photo while keeping all of the details.
ON1 Photo RAW has created exciting new workflow possibilities for photographers and Matt will discuss the different options. Topics will include importing photos from a camera card, folder organization, batch processing, and more and he will help customize a workflow that works specifically for you and your own personal needs.
ON1 Photo RAW is even more powerful and quicker to use when you use presets. Learn how to create your own, share them with others, and install presets you find online.
"[This class] exceeded my expectations. Other than the folks at on1, I am confident that no one knows more about the actual use of the software.
- Steve H.

"This met all of my expectations. Being relatively new to all of this, it's what I wanted... I think the 2-day training was right on. Your emphasis on important facets of on1 reflects your understanding of this great tool."
"Great to get to work along instead of just watch. Great to have one-on-one help! Good job keeping the pace for the whole class - you managed the group and schedule well. Great work taking questions and addressing specific needs. I strongly recommend if you want to bake in your learning with live practice and one-on-one instruction." - Randy from Arizona
"This was the class I was looking for. I had been using Perfect Photo for about a year and had watched some of the video presentations but did not really have the feel I wanted for the program. I had been searching for several months for someone to teach a face-to-face class and finally came upon Matt after seeing a link through on1’s emails. This was a crash course but it was perfect. Great explanations and demonstrations with plenty of time to ask questions and receive one-on-one time when needed. Matt’s experience as photographers and users of the software was very evident. It’s nice to have someone who actually uses a program in real life situations instead of a company representative. After sitting through this class, I can now start to do more with my photos and use Matt’s and on1’s videos as refreshers to the class. I now have a better understanding of the capabilities of the program and what I want to do or need to do with my photos." - Richard from Tampa, FL
"Workshop met my expectations. The teaching style was excellent, keeping me engaged throughout. Very good pace, allowing for coverage of a lot of material. Excellent teaching style and knowledge of the software. There were a lot of hands-on exercises which is the best way to learn. Very personable, good pace, plenty of work sessions."
"Great job – especially with patience. Some of my/our questions were repeats, but I greatly appreciate your patience and re-education where needed."
"After the course I came home and have been back through my India photos and reprocessed them all. I was able to really enhance my final output significantly. Kudos to you and your instruction." - Jay M.
"I have had the on1 software for years and have been looking for a workshop as I've tried the software and didn't stick with it. I will use it with my workflow now. Loved the demonstration and time to work on the photos. Love the teaching style. This is a very informative workshop on Perfect Photo Suite. The workshop is well paced and Matt is a very knowledgable instructor." - Kim from Arizona
"You are near perfect in all aspects from teaching style, to preparation, to organization and materials. In that sense you exceeded my expectations. Great style, disposition and excellent command of the toolset. Thank you!"
"It made me interested in going even further into photo editing than I had expected it would."
Frequently Asked Questions for this Fall Tetons Workshop
Is there any shooting involved in this workshop?
No. This is a classroom only photo workshop and we will be only using our own computers to process and enhance photos you have already taken and/or those provided to you in the class.
Do I need to bring my own computer? What if I don't have a laptop?
Yes, you will need to bring your own computer to the class - preferably a laptop computer. Please have ON1 Photo RAW already installed and verify before class that it is working properly. If you do not have a laptop computer you can bring your desktop computer. Just be sure to give yourself enough time prior to the start of the class to carry it into the classroom and set it up.
Can spouses attend?
I have a no tag-along policy. Spouses, family members, friends, etc. who are traveling with you and who haven’t registered are unable to partake in any group functions. This policy is in place to limit distractions for the other students attending.
Workshops are also not a location for pets and as such are not allowed with the exception of guide dogs.
If a spouse or friend wants to attend they will need to register.
I am a pure beginner (or advanced) photographer. Is this workshop for me?
This workshop is open to all photography levels from beginner to advanced. I have had students who didn't know what an f-stop was and I have had those who are just about ready to or are already selling their own prints. Being a small class, I am able to work with each student individually no matter their experience level to help them improve and reach their individual goals. With that being said, if you are an advanced user of ON1 Photo software you may find this class a little lacking as it focuses on newer users and those still not 100% comfortable with the software.
I have or plan on purchasing your online course. Will I get anything different out of your in-person classroom workshop?
Absolutely! The majority of students who have taken this class have already purchased my online class or do so soon after the workshop. Having access to me for 16 hours to ask any questions you have and get one-on-one help with your own personal needs been invaluable to students. Almost all the photos used in the class are different than the online course photos too. And many students learn better in a hands-on environment.
What sets you apart from other workshop instructors?
I absolutely love teaching. I have over 26 years of experience making my career with my cameras and teaching & sharing my experiences along the way.
I am detail orientated and put the needs of my students first. I have extensive experience dealing with all types of situations and people and love answering all of my students questions.
I have a unique photo background with experience creating and selling my work in such diverse fields as photojournalism, sports, portrait, wedding, editorial, and commercial photography. My specialty since 2006 has been fine art landscape photography.
I draw from all of those life experiences to provide you with whatever technical and artistic guidance you need. With my help, you will grow and expand your visual expression as well as your technical skills. In addition, I hope you have a great time in the process, immersing yourself in photography and sharing in my passion for photography.
There is no holding back with information from me either. I have no problems teaching you all that I know and showing you exactly how I photograph and process my photos. You can ask me anything!
Lastly, as you can see I spend a lot of time on these web pages in an attempt to give you as much info as possible on what my workshops are about, what is included, schedules, what to bring, where we will photograph, and more. I want you to have as much info as possible when considering one of my workshops. If I am missing something and you need more info feel free to call me at 480-818-9566 or contact me here.
Why should I attend a program with Matt Suess?
I will teach you how to create inspiring and amazing fine art quality photographs. You will learn how to see more creatively and how to translate that vision into a final image that has emotional impact.
I make it easy to learn techniques and concepts that you will take with you every time you walk out the door with your camera. I have extensive experience shooting and selling my fine art photography as well as teaching the concepts of photography. I am a hands-on learner myself and teach using a hands-on approach that will give you the best opportunity to retain information and further your photography skills long after the workshop has concluded.
Lastly I love teaching small groups. Most of my workshops feature small sizes with up to 10 students on average. This allows for extremely low teacher to student ratios and provides many extremely valuable one-on-one opportunities to work with me during the workshop.
Do you provide travel insurance for your workshop participants?
I do not provide travel insurance as part of our workshop fees but definitely recommend it. I highly recommend trip insurance that also includes travel health insurance.
Travelex Insurance Services is a BBB Accredited business with an A+ rating (although note I have no personal experience with this company). The cost for travel insurance is typically 4-7% of the total trip cost, depending upon age and other variable factors.
Do you provide transportation?
I do not supply transportation for my workshops.
What’s included in my tuition?
Tuition includes classroom instruction, classroom photos and notes provided by me, and critiques of your digital files during our classroom sessions. Travel costs, lodging, and meals (unless otherwise specified) are not included in the cost of tuition.
