Cow Canyon Trading Post – Utah

Sometimes it just takes a while for inspiration to strike. This photo in particular took a couple years before everything was just right.

I have driven past this old car over a dozen times in the last few years with never stopping for a photo. There were many reasons for not stopping and it all had to do with the light. Most times I drove by the sunlight was either too harsh or hidden behind a blanket of clouds.

This time however the light was just right with attractive clouds in the sky and I pulled my RV over to photograph.

Kiva and Ladder at Mesa Verde National Park Colorado

Sunlight shines down inside a kiva at Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado in this photograph from August of 2008.

In order to get into this underground kiva I had to climb down the ladder. If anyone has ever been in a Kiva before you know it is a pretty small room. So once I found a good composition I placed the widest angle lens I had on my camera and crouched down to get this shot.

While it looks like I had the kiva all to myself I had to patiently wait for tourists to come and go so I could photograph during the brief moments when no one else was in there with me.

Dust from the ground helped illuminate the sunlight ray coming from the above opening and the reflected light off the ground and wall gave me all the light I needed inside the dark Kiva.

Sunset at Paines Creek Beach on Cape Cod

Every once in a while everything lines up perfectly and you hit a home run.

That is what happened to me this particular evening at Paine’s Creek Beach & Landing in Brewster on Cape Cod, Mass.

One of my favorite places to photograph, I arrived here in the early afternoon – hours before sunset. Light clouds on the horizon were telling me there could be a nice sunset later in the evening.

Once the sun started setting, the light and color started reflecting off the clouds and it kept getting more colorful and more intense as each minute passed. I barely even noticed the thousands of no-see-ums practically eating me alive while photographing this amazing scene.

Easily one of the best sunsets I ever saw and had the chance to photograph on Cape Cod in the 7 years I lived there.

I took this photograph of Delicate Arch in Moab, Utah on a particularly cold January day in 2009, with a snow-capped La Sal Mountains in the background.

The way I hiked in to the arch was quite dangerous – a narrow sheet of ice with huge drop-offs in some places. I ended up finding another way to hike out later in the dark and was able to avoid the ice on the way out.

Aspen Glory in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains

A few weeks ago it was peak fall foliage in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico and I spent a few mornings photographing in the area.

I photographed this scene on a chilly but crystal clear morning. In this particular aspen grove all of the leaves were a bright golden yellow which certainly stood out from the deep blue sky. I was looking for a shot a little different from the traditional “lay-on-the-ground-and-look-up” shot. So I stood at the edge of the grove instead of inside it and I centered my composition on the tallest tree.

Fall Serenity – fall foliage along a stream in Santa Fe

This is only my second full summer here in Santa Fe, New Mexico and I have recently found a new photo playground – up in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

I first scouted the area the other week, then brought our photography workshop students up there for a sunrise shoot. A few days following the photo workshop I returned to spend more time photographing.
